Mirrors Edge 2009
Are frst-person shooters really‘first person’? Think about it. In such games, all you get to see from the player’s point of view is his gun, and the hand that’s holding it. You can’t feel the strain when the character is running, and when he jumps, it’s about as unrealistic as a video game can get. This is why the developers at EA DICE decided to change the way people look at FPS games, and why Mirror’s Edge was born.Come to think of it, to call Mirror’Edge a first person ‘shooter’ would be grossly unfair. Yes, it is completely frst person, but there’s very little shooting to it. As EA senior producer Owen O’Brien puts it, “Mirror’s Edge is an action adventure, and not a shooter. The game is about the person, not about the gun.” This is why the game play consists of physical maneuvers like running and jumping frst, and combat—be it hand to hand or with weaponry—later.
Mirror’s Edge is set in the near future, in a clean and sparkling city. While this city might seem like Utopia it is actually the complete opposite, governed by a totalitarian government which loves to tap all means of communication—phone lines, mail, the Internet. The only way to battle this system is to deliver the message personally. This is where runners come in. Faith, the protagonist in the game, is one such runner who delivers messages for the underworld. While she tries to free her sister from the clutches of a corrupt government, she ends up being chased by its own servants. The dominant colors in the city are blue and white, completely devoid of greens and grays. We were instantly reminded of City 17 from Half Life 2, as both these cities give you the same sense of foreboding.
